Towards an Integrated Marine and Maritime Science Community- MARCOM+ initiative
- The initiative will contribute to the development of an “European Marine & Maritime Science Forum”. This partnership consists of a mechanism for providing M&M advice. During the MARCOM+ initiative life time, the consortium will test and improve modalities in order to achieve long-term sustainability, based on shared interests and shared leadership.

Support Action to initiate cooperation between the Communities of European MARine and MARitime REsearch and Science- EMAR²RES
- This is an initiative that came forth from the Maritime Industries Forum (MIF) and its R&D committee in 2005 and is making strident efforts to regularly update R&D requirements for European competitiveness, innovation and the meeting of regulations like safety and environment.

Integration of European marine research networks of excellence – EUROMARINE
- EuroMarine aims towards a durable integration between the major European marine networks - EUR-OCEANS, MarBEF and Marine Genomics Europe -, with a roadmap for joint programming, creating synergies between different scientific fields, and a common research strategy and a shared vision for the oceans of tomorrow. EuroMarine will engage the European marine data management and scientific communities in durably shaping the long-term integration of data and lead technological developments. It will have a leading role in structuring and driving forward marine biological research and technical development in Europe and beyond.

Black Sea Research Network
- The Black Sea Research Network (BSRN) is an action-focused and multidisciplinary network of policy-oriented research institutes that develop research programmes on issues of importance to the political, social and economic development of the Black Sea region. It represents an innovative attempt to structure and coordinate a network of research institutes (and researchers) focusing on the wider Black Sea region.

Black Sea Universities Network
- The Black Sea Universities Network (BSUN) has been established based on the recommendation of the PABSEC Cultural, Education and Social Affairs Committee during the session held in Bucharest in August 1997. The BSUN was founded for the purpose of developing educational, scientific, and cultural cooperation and exchanges among the Universities of the BSEC Member States and other institutions with similar concern.

Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation
- The Black Sea Trust will fund programs that strengthen cross-border ties, civic participation, democratic governance, and the rule of law in the wider Black Sea region. The broad goals of the Black Sea Trust include building trust among citizens in their public institutions and to strengthen this critical set of institutions; affirming the value of citizen participation in the democratic process; and fostering regional, cross-border ties in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

Commission on the Black Sea
- The Commission on the Black Sea is a civil society initiative developed and launched jointly in 2009 by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, the Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation, the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV), and the International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS).

Towards Integrated Marine Research Strategy and Programmes (SEAS- ERA)
- SEAS-ERA, as an overarching marine FP7 ERA-NET, is of strategic importance for the European Research Area. Several European strategic fora (e.g. ESFRI) and European Commissions Communications (e.g. Communication on Joint programming 2008) have emphasised marine research as a field where major synergistic benefits can be reached by improving the coordination of research and infrastructure investments. SEAS-ERA overall objective is to facilitate the establishment of a stable and durable structure for strengthening marine research across the European Sea Basins. To do so the project brings together 20 major European Marine Research Funding Organisations from 20 countries in the basin regions of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, and the Marine Board-ESF.

The Commission on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution
- The Commission on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution (the Black Sea Commission or BSC) via its Permanent Secretariat is the intergovernmental body established in implementation of the Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution (Bucharest Convention), its Protocols and the Strategic Action Plan for the Rehabilitation and Protection of the Black Sea.

Maritime Technologies II - Martec II
- Given the success of MARTEC I now MARTEC II is an ERA.NET project which has 28 ministries and funding organisations from 24 countries.

SCOPE-EAST
- The project "Scenarios for a co-ordinated approach to sustainable S/T cooperation with the Eastern Neighbours of the EU (SCOPE-EAST)" intends to take sustainable steps in view of an enhanced coordination of the R&D co-operation of interested EU-Member States and Associated Candidate States with Russia and Eastern Europe. SCOPE-EAST will address the question of how to achieve optimum coherence between national cooperation strategies and the EU R&D cooperation strategy and of how cooperation in R&D can contribute to other policies of the EU such as the European Neighbourhood policy. Target countries of SCOPE-EAST are in the first step Russia and Ukraine.

IncoNet EECA
- The partnership between the countries of the European Union and Eastern Europe/Central Asia (EECA) is of utmost importance for the political, economic and social development of both regions. The project will address policy stakeholders from the EU/AC and EECA countries. The aim is to establish and sustain three dedicated S&T Policy Dialogue Platforms: one bi-regional EU/AC with all Eastern European and Central Asian countries, and two bilateral platforms for the respective dialogues of EU/AC with Russia and with Ukraine. The existing policy framework for cooperation will hereby be highlighted and improved. The Global Environment Facility (GEF)
- The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a global partnership among 178 countries, international institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the private sector to address global environmental issues while supporting national sustainable development initiatives. It provides grants for projects related to six focal areas: biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, and persistent organic pollutants.

Black Sea Global Ocean Observing System
- The Black Sea GOOS is a local Association formed by the Black Sea riparian countries in order to foster Operational Oceanography in the region and set up links with other regional and global organizations (with similar objectives).

The Black Sea NGO Network (BSNN)
- The Black Sea NGO Network (BSNN), established in 1998 and registered in 1999, is a regional association of NGOs from all Black Sea countries.

The Black Sea Scene
- The Black Sea SCENE project aims to establish a Black Sea Scientific Network of leading environmental and socio-economic research institutes, universities and NGOs from the countries around the Black Sea and to develop a virtual data and information infrastructure that will be populated and maintained by these organisations to improve the identification, access, exchange, quality indication and use of their data and information about the Black Sea.

The Action Plan-BS
- The aim of the Action Plan-BS Project has been the preparation of an Action Plan in Science and Technology for the Black Sea countries and its adoption at the level of relevant Ministers. To achieve its goal the project included preparatory work on a draft Action Plan and the organisation of two events: a High Level Officials meeting and a Ministerial Meeting.

The Baku Initiative
- The Baku Initiative is a policy dialogue on energy cooperation between the European Union and the littoral states of the Black Sea, Caspian Sea and their neighbours, undertaken as part of the INOGATE programme. The initiative was announced on 13 November 2004 at the Energy Ministerial Conference in Baku. The aim of the Baku Initiative is enhancing integration of the energy markets of participating countries with the EU energy market to create transparent energy markets, capable of attracting investment as well as enhancing security of energy supply.

ICBSS (International Organisation)
- The International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS) was founded in 1998 as a non-profit organisation. It has since fulfilled a dual function. On the one hand, it is an independent research and training institution focusing on the wider Black Sea region. On the other hand, it is a related body of the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) and serves as its acknowledged think-tank.
